A week full of interesting debates
The Friendly Debate was an amazing opportunity, especially for the Juniors, to dive into the sphere of Debating. Our Juniors did a great job considering this was their first time getting a whiff of an actual debate against opponents. The Seniors convinced the adjudicators, arguing that social media should be restricted to private use only. With these positive experiences, the dedicated Seniors Team along with their coach Karoline Fix, met on Saturday morning to depart for their first official rounds in the Senior League of the German Debating Society. Neither the fact that it was the weekend nor some of us suffering from persistent colds, could prevent us from travelling to Ulm. The Schubart Sharks welcomed us warmly and we all sensed an incomparable vibe. Ready to go into their first battle as Seniors, our students and coach could not wait for the impromptu motion to be announced. The motion our team had to oppose was: This house believes that Germany should use juries in all criminal cases. The THG Seniors managed to convince the adjudicators in this very complex debate and celebrated their first round as Seniors claiming a victory against Bavarian International School’s team. The second round was the prepared motion we had already practiced in our Friendly Debate in Stuttgart. However, this time, we unfortunately could not convince the adjudicators.
Nevertheless, we received very reassuring and constructive feedback and cannot wait to apply it during our next rounds in January, which is also when our Juniors will compete in the German Debating Society for the first time! Stay tuned for updates on how the following rounds will go
